“Support from the diaphragm” meant nothing to me for years. The cue that actually worked was imagining suspending the inhale rather than pushing the exhale. Curious what unlocked it for everyone else - singers and wind players both, since I suspect we’re chasing the same thing.
Flautist, and yes - same animal. The image that fixed mine: keep the ribs wide as you play out, instead of letting them collapse inward. “Suspend the inhale” is exactly it - the support is resisting the collapse, not pushing.
Brass agrees too. We say “breathe like you’re about to sigh, then don’t let the sigh rush out.” Steady air beats forced air, every time.
