Adult returner here. My notes are clean but the pedal is muddying everything - I think I’m changing it on the beat instead of after it. For those who got past this: what actually fixed your legato pedaling? Did it click from a rule, or just from listening harder?
It clicks when you stop watching your foot and start judging by ear: change the pedal just after the new note lands, and listen for the previous harmony to disappear. I have students hum the bass line so they hear the overlap they’re trying to remove.
Also try half-pedaling by depth, not all-or-nothing - a shallow lift clears the mud without killing resonance. Practise one line “ears only”, eyes closed. The foot follows the ear surprisingly fast once the ear knows the target.
